Last spring I was wandering around Copenhagen – you know, trying to look like I belonged there instead of obviously being an American tourist – and I kept staring at these bike lanes. Not because they were Instagram-pretty or anything, but because they actually worked. During what should’ve been rush hour chaos, I watched thousands of people on bikes flowing through dedicated infrastructure that clearly prioritized humans over cars. And I’m standing there thinking about Phoenix, where trying to bike to work is basically a death wish on roads designed exclusively for SUVs.
That trip smacked me in the face with something I’d been missing in all my sustainable design work. Sure, I can help clients choose non-toxic materials and improve their indoor air quality, but individual buildings exist within larger urban systems.

Most American cities, especially here in the Southwest, are designed in ways that make sustainable living nearly impossible – doesn’t matter how green your house is.
Take my own neighborhood in Austin. It’s one of those sprawling developments from the early 2000s where every single errand requires driving. The closest grocery store is four miles away on busy roads with sidewalks that just… end. Randomly. Even though my house has low-VOC everything and energy-efficient windows, I’m still burning gas for basic errands because the whole urban design assumes everyone drives everywhere. The system works against sustainability from the start.
This really hit me during a project last year with clients in one of those master-planned communities outside town. They spent probably $35,000 on solar panels, high-performance insulation, the works. Beautiful sustainable interior finishes, too. Their energy bills dropped dramatically, and they felt great about their environmental impact. But then I watched them drive separate cars to Target because there wasn’t any pedestrian access to the shopping centre half a mile away. Their daily transportation emissions probably wiped out everything they’d saved with all those building upgrades.
That’s when I started getting obsessed with cities that had actually figured this out. Copenhagen wasn’t some happy accident – they spent decades deliberately redesigning their infrastructure to prioritize walking and cycling. Something like 40% of commuters bike to work there, even in winter. The city planned for this with protected bike lanes, convenient bike parking, transit connections that make car-free living actually practical instead of just theoretical.
But Copenhagen’s in Denmark, right? Different climate, different culture, different everything. What really grabbed my attention were places like Medellín, Colombia. Twenty years ago, you’d know it mainly for violence and poverty. Today it’s winning international awards for urban innovation. They built cable cars connecting hillside neighborhoods to downtown, created green corridors along streams, developed public spaces that became genuine community gathering points. The transformation is incredible.
The genius wasn’t just the infrastructure itself but how they approached problems. Instead of typical highway expansion, they invested in public transit that worked for regular people. Instead of pushing development outward, they focused on making existing neighborhoods more livable. Instead of accepting pollution and heat islands as inevitable urban problems, they treated green space as essential infrastructure.
I started digging into other examples and honestly got a little obsessed. Curitiba, Brazil pioneered bus rapid transit systems that move people as efficiently as subways at a fraction of the cost. Singapore transformed from a developing nation into a “city in a garden” through aggressive green building requirements and urban planning that integrates nature throughout the city. Even in the U.S., places like Portland have shown how zoning changes and transit investment can create walkable neighborhoods where people actually want to live.
What strikes me about these success stories is they required long-term thinking and political will to change fundamental assumptions about how cities work. American urban planning, especially in the Southwest, got locked into car-centric development patterns after World War II. Everything spread out, densities dropped, walking or biking became impractical for most daily activities. We basically built cities that require fossil fuel consumption just to function.
The good news? Some southwestern cities are starting to wake up. Phoenix opened its first light rail line in 2008, and ridership exceeded projections from day one. Tucson’s streetcar connects the university to downtown, creating a corridor where people can actually live without cars. Even car-crazy Los Angeles is investing billions in public transit and bike infrastructure.

But change is slow and faces serious resistance. I was at a planning meeting in a suburb here last year where residents fought tooth and nail against allowing duplexes in single-family neighborhoods. The horror! Someone might build housing that two families could afford, and those families might not own multiple cars. The entire discussion revealed how deeply we’ve internalized sprawling, car-dependent development as normal and desirable.
Meanwhile, climate change makes these patterns increasingly dangerous. Phoenix already hits 115+ degrees regularly, making walking uncomfortable even for healthy adults. As temperatures rise, car-dependent sprawl becomes not just environmentally destructive but literally hazardous for people who can’t afford air-conditioned transportation. We need urban design that works for pedestrians and cyclists even in extreme heat.
That’s where traditional southwestern urban design offers lessons. Historic city centres like Santa Fe’s plaza or Tucson’s downtown were built before air conditioning, so they had to work with climate rather than against it. Narrow streets provided shade, buildings created courtyards and arcades for outdoor comfort, everything was walkable because people didn’t have cars.
I’m not saying we should abandon modern technology and go back to 1900 – my clients would revolt if I suggested giving up AC. But we can learn from pre-automotive urban design while incorporating contemporary knowledge about materials, energy systems, public health. Imagine neighborhoods with shaded walkways connecting mixed-use buildings, where you could walk to a grocery store, restaurant, and pharmacy without stepping into direct sunlight. Transit systems designed around desert conditions, with covered stations and climate-controlled vehicles.
Some developers are experimenting with this. Culdesac Tempe, opening next year, will be Arizona’s first car-free neighborhood. Residents can own cars but must park them in perimeter garages, keeping internal streets for walking, cycling, and playing. The buildings incorporate passive cooling strategies, and the entire development is designed around light rail access. It’s a small start, but represents fundamentally different thinking about how southwestern cities could work.
The exciting thing is how building performance and urban design reinforce each other. Dense, walkable neighborhoods make district energy systems economical. Mixed-use development reduces transportation emissions while creating more interesting, convenient places to live. Green infrastructure like tree canopies and water features help cool urban heat islands while making walking and cycling more pleasant.
I’ve been working with a nonprofit here that’s mapping “thermal equity” across the city. Wealthy neighborhoods have mature trees and substantial landscaping that keep temperatures several degrees cooler than low-income areas with minimal shade. This isn’t just comfort – it’s public health. When summer temperatures exceed 110 degrees, tree canopy becomes life-or-death infrastructure, especially for people who walk or wait for buses.
Creating more sustainable cities requires more than better individual projects, though.

It needs policy changes that allow mixed-use development, zoning that prioritizes walkability over parking requirements, public investment in transit and green infrastructure. It means electing officials who understand that sprawling car-dependent development patterns are financially unsustainable for cities and environmentally catastrophic for the planet.
As someone who’s spent years focused on sustainable interior design, I’m increasingly convinced that urban planning matters as much as low-VOC paint or FSC-certified wood. The most sustainably designed house in the world still contributes to sprawl if it’s built in a car-dependent location. A modest apartment in a walkable neighborhood might have lower total environmental impact than a net-zero house in the suburbs.
The cities getting this right aren’t perfect, but they’re showing what’s possible when urban planning prioritizes people over cars, long-term sustainability over short-term development profits, livability over pure efficiency. The Southwest has unique challenges but also unique opportunities to pioneer urban design appropriate for hot, arid climates. We just need the vision and political will to build cities that work with our environment rather than against it.
