The best part? Most of these strategies cost less than conventional decorating approaches. Those expensive window treatments I avoided initially? They would have been useless anyway. The furniture I moved instead of replacing? Saved thousands while dramatically improving function.

Now when friends ask for interior design advice, I start with the boring stuff first. Where does the sun hit at different times of day? What are your actual usage patterns? How do you want the space to feel during our 115-degree afternoons versus 40-degree winter mornings? Only after we understand those fundamentals do we talk about furniture styles and colour schemes.
The most beautiful interior in the world is worthless if you can't actually use it comfortably. But when you get the performance fundamentals right, the aesthetic choices become much more straightforward. Form really can follow function, and the results are spaces that are both gorgeous and genuinely sustainable in ways that matter for daily life.
