She breaks down all the ways conventional interior materials can affect health – VOCs from paint and adhesives, formaldehyde from composite wood products, flame retardants in upholstery that act as endocrine disruptors. I remember reading the chapter about children’s bedrooms and looking around my daughter’s nursery with complete horror. Everything I’d carefully selected for aesthetics was potentially making her sick. I ended up replacing half the furniture in our house after reading this book.
The technical foundation came from “Materials and Design: The Art and Science of Material Selection in Product Design” by Ashby and Johnson. It’s not specifically about interiors, but it taught me how to evaluate materials systematically instead of just trusting marketing claims. Why do some woods naturally resist moisture while others don’t? Which metals develop patina gracefully versus corroding badly? How do different fibre treatments affect textile durability? I started using their methodology to vet everything from flooring to fabric, and it transformed my specification process.
“The Hand-Sculpted House” might seem weird for an interior designer, but these folks understand natural materials better than anyone. They built homes using clay, sand, straw – materials that regulate humidity naturally and create healthy indoor environments without any synthetic treatments. Even when I’m working with conventional products, I apply their principles about breathable materials and natural moisture management. Their insights about thermal mass helped me understand why stone and concrete floors feel so comfortable temperature-wise.
Finding “Building Biology and Ecology” was like discovering a whole science I never knew existed. The building biology movement in Europe has been studying how materials and design affect human health for decades. They’ve identified specific problems with synthetic materials, electromagnetic fields, poor air circulation – issues that conventional interior design completely ignores. Reading this made me realise American design education is maybe twenty years behind in understanding health impacts of indoor environments.
“The Ecology of Commerce” by Paul Hawken shifted my thinking about the business side of sustainable design. Hawken argues that commerce can either destroy natural systems or restore them, depending on how businesses operate. This got me thinking about my role as a designer – was I contributing to environmental problems or helping solve them? Every specification decision became a choice between supporting destructive industries or companies trying to do better. It’s heavier than just picking pretty things for rooms.

This book saves hours of research because Piepkorn has already tested most options and knows which ones actually work in real projects.
“The Healthy House” by Bower focuses specifically on creating non-toxic homes, which is incredibly useful for clients with chemical sensitivities or health concerns. He explains how to identify problem materials, design effective ventilation, choose safe alternatives. I keep copies to lend clients because it helps them understand why sustainable design matters beyond just environmental benefits. When someone’s kid stops having respiratory problems after switching to healthier materials, that’s pretty convincing.
For understanding textiles, “Sustainable Fashion and Textiles” by Fletcher really opened my eyes to problems with conventional fabric production. The chemicals used in dyeing, finishing treatments that prevent staining but create health issues, synthetic fibres that shed microplastics – I had no idea how toxic the textile industry could be. Now I research every fabric manufacturer and specify natural fibres with minimal chemical processing whenever possible.
“Your Green Home” by Schreiber is great for explaining sustainable design to clients because it focuses on practical benefits rather than environmental theory. Better air quality, lower utility bills, materials that last longer – most people care more about personal benefits than saving the planet, which is fine by me if it gets them to choose healthier options. Schreiber understands that sustainable design has to work for people’s lifestyles or they won’t stick with it.
The book I probably reference most often is “Healthy Home, Healthy Family” by Davis because it covers everything from cleaning products to furniture finishes. Clients always ask about maintenance once I’ve specified natural materials, and this book explains how to care for wood floors without toxic chemicals, clean natural textiles, maintain stone surfaces safely.

It’s practical information that makes sustainable design actually livable.
These books didn’t just change my professional practice – they changed how I think about everything we bring into our homes. Reading them was honestly kind of depressing at first because I realised how much I didn’t know about materials I’d been specifying for years. But knowledge is power, right? Now I can help clients create healthier spaces instead of just prettier ones. My kids are growing up understanding that choices about materials and products actually matter, which gives me hope that their generation will demand better from the design industry.
