Meanwhile, I’m advocating for efficient building design while ignoring the digital equivalent of a poorly insulated house with single-pane windows facing west.

The parallel hit me hard during a recent project where I was helping a homeowner in Phoenix optimize their electricity usage. A website might have great functionality, but if it’s loading dozens of unnecessary scripts, high-resolution images that get compressed anyway, and tracking pixels that serve no user benefit, it’s essentially the digital equivalent of leaving windows open while running the air conditioning.

I started paying attention to this stuff more carefully after that conversation. When I’m researching manufacturers or checking product specifications online, I began noticing which sites loaded quickly and felt responsive versus those that made me wait… and wait. The efficient ones weren’t necessarily less attractive or functional. Often they were better designed, with clearer navigation and faster access to the information I actually needed.

There’s this manufacturer I work with regularly for cool roofing products – their old website was this flashy thing with huge hero images, embedded videos that started automatically, and animations everywhere. Looked impressive, sure, but it took thirty seconds to load on my office internet connection. Not great when you’re trying to quickly cheque product specifications during a client call. They redesigned last year with a focus on performance, and now the site loads in under three seconds. Same information, cleaner presentation, and I actually use their online tools now instead of calling for everything.

The building industry taught me that efficiency isn’t about deprivation or making things ugly. It’s about eliminating waste while maintaining or improving performance. That expensive west-facing window might look great in photos, but if it’s going to cost the homeowner $200 extra every summer in cooling bills, it’s poor design regardless of aesthetics. Same principle applies to digital experiences, honestly.

This doesn’t mean digital experiences need to be bare-bones or ugly – hell no. Some of the most beautiful, engaging websites I’ve encountered are also among the most efficient. Good design often means elegant simplicity, and elegant simplicity tends to be resource-efficient by nature. It’s the digital equivalent of passive solar design, where smart planning reduces the need for energy-intensive solutions.

What excites me about this connection is the potential for broader impact. Every building I help optimize might save thousands of kilowatt-hours annually, but a popular website or app that improves its efficiency could reduce energy consumption by orders of magnitude more. The reach is global and immediate. That’s pretty incredible when you think about it.

The construction industry is slowly embracing performance-based design, driven partly by energy codes and partly by client demand for lower operating costs. I’m curious whether the digital world will follow a similar path, with users and businesses increasingly prioritizing efficiency alongside functionality.
