Last week I walked into Roosevelt High’s environmental science classroom feeling pretty skeptical about the whole thing. The teacher, Ms. Martinez, had asked me to run some kind of community planning workshop with her students, and I’ll be honest – I was expecting blank stares and phones under desks. These kids deal with climate anxiety as a daily reality, but most have never connected the dots between environmental problems and how we actually build the places where people live.
I started simple. “Tell me about your neighborhoods.” The responses were depressingly familiar – endless strip malls, cookie-cutter subdivisions, nowhere to walk that’s actually useful.

This one girl, Sofia, described how her mom drives to Walmart for groceries, then to CVS for prescriptions, then to a completely different shopping centre for decent coffee. Three separate trips, fifteen miles total, for stuff that should be a ten-minute walk from home. Another kid complained about Phoenix’s joke of a bus system – forty-minute waits in 110-degree heat for buses that don’t go anywhere convenient anyway.
But here’s where it got interesting. When I asked them to imagine their ideal community, they immediately started describing mixed-use neighborhoods, tree-lined streets you could actually walk on, buildings designed for desert climate instead of fighting it. They’d never lived in places like this, but they understood instinctively what makes communities work.
So I scrapped my prepared presentation about sustainable design principles. Instead, I gave them a real challenge: design a 500-family neighborhood on fifty acres outside Phoenix. The catch? It had to work with desert conditions – 300+ sunny days, summer temps hitting 115°F regularly, only eight inches of rain per year – and use sixty percent less energy than typical Phoenix developments.
The immediate groans were music to my ears. “We’re not architects,” this kid Marcus protested. “How are we supposed to know about building stuff?”
Perfect. That’s exactly the attitude I wanted to shake up.
I explained something that drives me crazy about my profession – most of our built environment gets designed by people who don’t live in it. Engineers in climate-controlled offices create subdivisions where nobody can walk to buy milk. Architects design schools that require massive HVAC systems just to keep kids from overheating. City planners approve developments that guarantee everyone drives everywhere for everything. Meanwhile, the people actually living with these decisions never get asked what might work better.
I split them into five teams, gave each group the same constraints – desert climate, limited water, energy reduction goals, need for jobs and services and schools within reasonable distance – then turned them loose with poster boards and colored pencils. No formal training, no textbooks, just common sense and problem-solving.
What happened next reminded me why I switched from conventional practice to sustainable design nineteen years ago. These kids immediately started making connections that many professional planners miss. They clustered buildings to create shade and wind protection. Put the school and community centre in the middle so kids could walk there safely. Oriented streets to catch morning light while avoiding brutal afternoon sun. Created courtyards surrounded by housing – basically reinventing traditional desert settlement patterns without any formal training in vernacular architecture.
One team developed what they called “solar neighborhoods” – clusters of houses sharing solar installations and community gardens. Another designed “climate streets” with buildings stepping down in height to create natural ventilation. The third group organised everything around shared rainwater harvesting systems feeding community green spaces.
The solutions weren’t theoretical. They were responding to real constraints with practical thinking. “If it’s going to be 115 degrees outside,” Sofia explained while sketching covered walkways, “nobody’s walking down streets with no shade. And if we’re trying to save energy, why would you put huge windows facing west where they’ll turn the house into an oven all afternoon?”

Their reasoning was refreshingly practical – people need different amounts of space at different life stages, housing variety creates price variety, and shared walls mean less exterior surface to heat and cool.
The presentations blew me away. Kids who’d started the morning complaining about not being architects were confidently explaining thermal mass, passive solar design, and mixed-use development. More importantly, they connected environmental strategies to social benefits. The team organising everything around walking and biking talked about helping seniors and teenagers maintain independence. The group clustering services in neighborhood centres explained how this creates gathering places and reduces isolation.
They were solving environmental and social problems together instead of treating them as separate issues requiring separate solutions.
Their challenges were equally sophisticated. Several teams struggled with parking – they wanted to reduce driving but recognised that Phoenix residents still need cars. They experimented with shared parking areas, remote parking with shuttles, car-sharing programs, eventually settling on reduced parking requirements combined with better transit.
Others wrestled with density versus privacy. They wanted enough people to support walkable retail and good transit, but recognised Americans’ expectations for private outdoor space. Solutions included private courtyards, rooftop gardens, and semi-private shared green spaces serving multiple functions.
The hardest questions were economic. How much would these neighborhoods cost? Would people actually want to live there? How do you convince developers to try something different? I was honest – changing community development requires changing financing, regulation, and marketing. These are messy adult problems without clean answers.

But what these students demonstrated was that starting with climate and community needs instead of conventional assumptions generates better solutions. Their neighborhoods wouldn’t solve every environmental problem, but they’d use dramatically less energy, create less traffic, and build more resilient communities than standard suburban development.
As they cleaned up, Sofia asked whether real planners ever do exercises like this. I explained that professional planning is usually more complicated, involves more stakeholders, takes months or years. But the fundamental questions remain the same – how do we create places where people can live well while minimizing environmental damage?
She nodded thoughtfully. “So we basically need planners who think about what actually makes sense instead of just copying what everyone else does.”
Exactly. And maybe some of these kids will become exactly those planners.
