Our kitchen renovation became an experiment in local sourcing and climate-appropriate materials.
Instead of granite countertops (quarried in Brazil, polished in Italy, shipped to Phoenix), we used Sedona sandstone cut by a guy in Cottonwood. The transportation piece alone is huge. I started calculating shipping distances for common interior materials and the numbers are staggering. That "sustainable" bamboo flooring? Seven thousand miles. Italian tile? Six thousand miles. Meanwhile, saltillo tile made in Mexico travels maybe five hundred miles and costs half as much while lasting twice as long in our climate.

Local climate compatibility became my primary filter for sustainable recommendations. Adobe walls aren't trendy, but they're made from dirt literally scraped from building sites, require no industrial processing, provide excellent thermal mass, and last centuries with minimal maintenance. That's true sustainability.
I started working with local suppliers and craftspeople, building relationships that let me offer clients materials they'd never considered. There's a tile maker in Tucson creating gorgeous pieces from recycled clay and desert sand. A furniture builder in Flagstaff specializing in pieces made from beetle-kill pine cleared from forest management projects. An ironworker in Phoenix crafting railings and fixtures from scrap steel.
These connections transformed my practice. Instead of sending clients to big box stores to choose between industrial products manufactured who-knows-where, I could offer locally-made alternatives with known provenance and climate-appropriate performance.
The education component was crucial. Most clients had never thought about material lifecycles or regional appropriateness. They just wanted things to look good and last reasonably long. I started showing them how local materials often looked better and lasted longer while costing less and supporting regional economies.
Take window treatments. Standard vinyl blinds last maybe three years in our intense UV environment before becoming brittle and discolored. They're cheap upfront but expensive over time. Meanwhile, locally-woven cotton fabrics treated with natural UV protectants cost more initially but last decades while providing better insulation and light control. Paint was another revelation. Low-VOC paints cost premium prices but often perform poorly in our climate – they don't adhere well to surfaces that expand and contract dramatically with temperature swings. I found a regional manufacturer making mineral-based paints using local clays that not only had zero VOCs but actually improved wall breathability and thermal performance.
The results speak for themselves. Clients who embraced locally-sourced, climate-appropriate materials consistently report better performance, lower maintenance costs, and higher satisfaction than those who chose conventional designer materials. Their homes feel more connected to place, age more gracefully, and require less frequent updates.
But I'll be honest – sustainable interior transformation requires patience and willingness to question assumptions. You can't just walk into a showroom and pick things off shelves.

You need to research suppliers, understand material properties, and sometimes accept that the perfect sustainable option doesn't exist yet.
The industry is changing, though. More designers are prioritizing local sourcing and climate compatibility. Building codes are starting to consider lifecycle impacts. Clients are asking better questions about where materials come from and how they'll perform over time.
My approach now integrates sustainability from project start, not as an afterthought. We begin with regional material inventories, identify local suppliers, and design around what's available nearby rather than specifying materials first and sourcing second. This process takes more time initially but results in better performance, lower costs, and genuine sustainability that goes beyond marketing claims.
True sustainable interior design means creating spaces that work beautifully with their local environment while supporting regional economies and minimizing transportation impacts. It's possible, it's often more affordable than conventional approaches, and it creates interiors that feel authentically connected to place. You just have to be willing to think differently about what materials mean and where they come from.
