But here's where it gets interesting. I tested tung oil last year on some outdoor benches, thinking I was choosing the most natural option. Pure tung oil is definitely low-impact, extracted from nuts rather than synthesized in a lab. The application was pleasant, no harsh fumes, and it really brought out the wood grain beautifully. Six months later though? The finish was already showing wear, and I had to reapply. More materials consumed, more time spent, more waste generated.

I learned this the hard way with a dining table I finished with pure linseed oil about four years ago. Seemed like the most natural choice possible. The oil soaked deep into the wood, created a beautiful matte finish, and felt completely safe to use. But maintaining it became a part-time job. Every few months I'd have to sand out water rings and apply fresh oil. The amount of sandpaper and oil I've gone through on that one table is probably more than I'd use finishing five tables with polyurethane.

Her point was that the most sustainable finish might be the one that protects the wood longest, even if it's not made from the most natural ingredients. Wood is a valuable resource too, and protecting it well means those trees didn't get cut down for nothing.

I've started recommending what I call "practical sustainability." For furniture that gets heavy use, I suggest water-based polyurethanes. Lower toxicity than solvent-based options, good durability, easy cleanup. For pieces that won't see much wear, pure tung oil or shellac can be great choices if you don't mind periodic maintenance.

The key is matching the finish to the use and being honest about maintenance expectations.
